THE DISTRICT CHAIR MINUTE
From: Joe Gettys <jegettys@carolina.rr.com>
Date: Friday, Sept 7, 2018

Good afternoon Sapona Scouters:

Here is a friendly reminder our September Roundtable will be Tuesday, 9/11/18, 7:00 PM at the St. John Lutheran Church Community Building in Salisbury (home of the Sapona District Scout Office).

If you miss this Roundtable, you’re unit is going to miss out on some really important information.  Please ensure your unit is represented.

Please join us for information on the following subjects:

  1. Cub Scout & Parent Weekends at Camp Barnhardt-Sapona District hosts the two weekend sessions on September 28-30.  We’ll have information regarding the four Cub-Parent Weekends planned and would also welcome Adult Scouters to volunteer for Staff positions-particularly on Sapona’s hosted weekend.
  2. Fall Roundup updates.  Jeff Bays has done a great job scheduling School Recruiting Nights.  Jeff will give updates on dates, locations and times for units to be represented to recruit new youth.
  3. BE A SCOUT recruiting website use.  Did you know the BSA maintains a website for youth to apply to join Scouting units?  This website maintains locations of our Scouting units and meeting times.  We’ve been getting applications from youth to join through this website.  Is your unit aware and logged into the BE A SCOUT web tool?  If not, Jeff Bays will share how to use this valuable tool to help you grow your unit.  Jeff sent an email out to all SM’s, CM’s & CA’s today on how to get a PIN number for your unit to log into the website & will show how to use the tool at Roundtable.
  4. Sapona District Webelos Camporee.  September 15-16th.  The Webelos Camporee Staff have a fun filled weekend planned where Scouts can also pass off some advancement requirements.  Dave will provide final details so your Webelos Scouts can have a great start to this Scout program year.
  5. Sapona Boy Scout/ Venture Crew Camporee. It’s Back to the Future with a spectacular weekend planned for October 19-21 at Camp Barnhardt. Marty, Biff, Dr. Brown and all the cool kids are going to be out for this event!  Make sure all of your troop & crew are registered and plan to get in on all the fun.
  6. An update on required Youth Protection Training for 2018All Adult Scouters must have taken the new (released in February of 2018) YPT course prior to October 1st 2018 to continue to be registered. Please note that at least 54% of Sapona District’s Adult Scouters Youth Protection Training certificates will expire by October 1st.
  7. An update of Internet Advancement & ScoutBook. Advancement should now be reported using ScoutBook.  We’ll share some information regarding your unit’s ability and costs to use this.
  8. Sapona District Awards Database Project – Henry Fairley is leading a project to ensure Sapona District has accurate listings of Scouters who received any District Adult Recognitions.  Henry will share his findings.
  9. The University of Scouting Adult Training-10/13/18.  It doesn’t matter the position you are registered in; there will be interesting and engaging training sessions for you including Cubmaster & Den Leaders Specific Training, Scoutmaster & Assistant Scoutmaster Training, Troop & Pack Committee Training. These are just a few of the 49 different training session being offered.
  10. Popcorn Sales!  Sapona’s Popcorn sales are out of the gates STRONG!  We’ll spend a few minutes ensuring everyone is in good shape to make this the best popcorn selling season ever.

If you want to bring a snack to share with all, please feel free to do so.  If you’re still dieting after the fabulous picnic at our August Program Planning Conference, we understand.

There are so many excellent programs and events underway in Sapona District and Central NC Council, we should all be proud of the great efforts our Scouters are doing to mentor the next generation of American leaders.  I certainly know that I am and I thank each and every one of you for your service to Scouting.

With grateful appreciation,

Joe Gettys
